Riesling - Lyric

gri_wine

Lyric is the songlike quality in poetry, the pleasing succession of sounds in music, and a lyric soprano is a voice of light and unforced quality. So it’s the perfect name for a wine that is pure, expressive yet restrained.
2009 Vintage

“Off-dry in style, this wine has a steely brooding nose with aromas of pineapple and lime. The suggestion of weight and depth on the nose is confirmed by the palate which is gentle and rich but delivers a classical varietal expression of lime and mineral.” Olly Masters – Winemaker

Vintage Notes

This season we had our second block of Riesling come into production which has given us the opportunity to produce two styles of Riesling, hence the advent of “Lyric” an off-dry style to complement our medium-dry “Limelight” Riesling. As the season progressed it became apparent that the new block’s fruit would be more suited to the drier style.
The strong growth of the Riesling during the first part of the season was fuelled by the warm temperatures and then heavy rain in December. At all the critical times during the season the conditions were ideal however overall it was a cooler season than normal and so the challenge was to regularly thin the fruit to keep the vines in balance and allow adequate ripening. The “Lyric” Riesling was hand-picked on 17th April at just under 5.61 tonnes per hectare.

Food Match

This off-dry Riesling is refreshing and perfect to enjoy just on its own but this style is also extremely versatile when it comes to food pairing and of all the white wines, this one will match the widest variety of flavours. The very best pairing options are seafood and shellfish, fruit dishes, pork, smoked meats, and anything that’s a little spicy.

Winemaking

The hand picked fruit was whole bunch pressed to tank for settling. The majority of the juice (82%) was then racked, inoculated and cool fermented to dryness in stainless steel to retain varietal purity. The remaining portion was allowed to undergo spontaneous ferment in older oak in order to add more complex mineral/flint characters to the wine.

Misha’s Vineyard

Misha’s Vineyard is located on one of the most spectacular sites in New Zealand at the edge of Lake Dunstan in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago. The sun drenched north-west facing terraces of the 57 hectare estate provide the optimal conditions for producing world-class Pinot Noir and a range of aromatic white varieties.
